In the most celebrated action so far against any Chinese military intrusion into the Indian side of the disputed border in Somdurong Chu in the Walong sector of the eastern border in 1986–1987, the very forceful commander of Indian Army’s IV Corps immediately brought in heavy artillery and rained down intense and sustained fire on the PLA unit, significantly, not with the aim of obliterating that Chinese encampment or vacating the aggression, but merely to show that the Indian Army could fight. “This incident . . . in which we went very aggressive surprised the Chinese and their response to our reaction was subdued,” remembers Lieutenant General Oberoi.

Indeed, it was after this experience that a chastened Deng Xiaoping is supposed to have commented to his colleagues that China “[color=#ff0000]cannot any longer take a chicken knife to a bullock,”[/color] meaning, that while India was a “chicken” in 1962 and was dealt with easily, a quarter of century later it had grown into militarily the much heftier “bullock” and required a different strategy to subdue it. As a consequence of this aggressive show of Indian resolve, China sought rapprochement with India; Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was invited by Deng to visit Beijing in 1987.The lesson that China respects power and forceful actions to safeguard its interests will get India respectful treatment by the Chinese was, however, lost on the Indian government
