ROUDRAM Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 NEW DELHI: Border Security Force (BSF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) got new chiefs on Tuesday with senior IPS officers U K Bansal andPranay Sahay taking over as director generals of the two forces. While BSF is deployed as the main border guarding force along Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders, SSB is deployed on Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders. Besides, National Disaster Management Authority is set to get its new administrative head with government on Tuesday appointing fertilizer secretary Sutanu Behuria as NDMA secretary. Behuria is an IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre. After taking charge as BSF chief, Bansal - an IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre - in response to a question on withdrawal of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) said the issue was "very complex" and it would obviously not yield a "simplistic solution". "All I can say is that an appropriate decision would be taken by the government in the larger interest of the country and the region which is being discussed and BSF will implement it," said Bansal, who was secretary (internal security) in the home ministry prior to assuming charge as the BSF chief. Asked whether the force had sufficient immunity and if it would work without AFSPA, he said, "AFSPA is to give cover to armed forces of the Union under some special circumstances. Since BSF is also an armed force of the Union, hence it also got cover under it." On infiltration activities in Jammu and Kashmir, Bansal said figures revealed attempts to infiltrate during the current year were down from previous years. "However, successful infiltration is roughly at the same level as last year," he said. http://timesofindia....ow/10574391.cms
