[left]Quonset Point, (Rhode Island). Nov. 6: President Kennedy warmly welcomed India’s Prime Minister, Mr Nehru, here today.[/left]
[/left][left][font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=3]Mr Nehru’s United States Air Force plane flew in from New York at 11.48 am (1648 GMT). Fog had hung over this navy bas all morning but it cleared sufficiently in time for Nehru’s plane to land. Mr Kennedy sailed over Narragansett Bay from New port, Rhode Island, in the Presidential motor launch, the Honey Fitz, to greet his Indian visitor. Immediately after Mr Nehru stepped from the plane President Kennedy stepped forward and welcomed him warmly.[/size][/font][/left]
[/left][left][font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=3]Mrs Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister’s daughter followed him down the plane ramp. A Naval Guard rendered military honours and a Naval band played the two national anthems. But apart from that the formalities were left until later today, when the President and the Prime Minister were due to fly together in the Presidential Jet to Washington for the official start of Mr Nehru’s state visit. The military plane carrying Mr Nehru, who arrived here from London yesterday took off from Laguardia Airport (New York) at 10.56 am (1556 GMT) on the flight to Quonset Point Naval Air Station.[/size][/font][/left]
[/left][left][font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=3]A reporter asked Mr Nehru before he boarded the plane what he considered the chief threat to world peace? The Indian leader replied: “I should say the lack of development of the human mind. There is too much hate in our hearts. That’s a bad thing. It upsets the mind if you hate too much.”[/size][/font][/left]
