Spend some time with her and the 40-year-old sex worker talks about a tale that is all too familiarly disturbing.Lata was 26 when she became a sex worker. Her husband was badly injured in a road accident and needed money for treatment. "Since we had eloped and married, neither of our families came forward with help. That was when I made my first dealing as a sex worker," says Lata. She had gotten married to her welder boyfriend when she was 18. However, life was not rosy for Lata who worked as a security guard at a city hospital for a monthly salary of Rs 3,000. With two small children and a husband who was getting addicted to drugs, Lata was left to fend for herself. With few options left, she turned to her neighbourhood in Guindy which had a lot of sex workers and a few NGOs that worked with them. Thus came the subtle introduction to the profession. "A sex worker in the area told me that I could claim Rs 100 by registering with one of the NGOs as a sex worker," says Lata.Later, Lata was offered a job by the same NGO to teach children of sex workers in the evenings. "I used to work at the NGO in the evenings and make Rs 400 a month," she says. "Even at that time, a few of the sex workers had referred me to some of their clients but I refused. But, it was getting increasingly difficult to manage expenses. With no other way to raise money for my husband's treatment, I became a sex worker," she says. A few years later, Lata's husband passed away.Lata says she has around 20 regular customers. "I make all my dealings over phone and entertain my customers only at their own house," she says. Even today, her children have no idea about her sex work. Her son is a trained welder and her daughter is a college student. "I always made sure that I had an alternative job so that my children didn't ask questions about where the money came from," says Lata, who has plans to set up a food stall very soon.Lata has never gotten into trouble with the police or with a client. "Legalisation would improve our quality of life and provide better healthcare. But I would never declare myself as a sex worker or be ready to live in a red light area," she says.source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Married-at-18-sex-worker-at-26/articleshow/10650675.cms
