At last, there is some relief for former Karnataka tourism minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, who has been languishing in the Chanchalguda jail, Hyderabad, for more than two months in connection with the illegal iron ore mining case.
The CBI special court on Tuesday granted Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law B V Srinivasa Reddy “special category prisoner” status keeping in view their social status and health conditions.
Hitherto, they had been treated as “ordinary prisoners. As per the special category prisoner status, Janardhan Reddy will now be shifted to “A” class barracks. He will be provided with separate and spacious cells, cot and bed and a writing table. They can get food brought from outside and can meet their family members.
Though the CBI opposed the special category status to Gali, the court felt that the latter’s claim was justified, as the charges against him were yet to be proved. Till such time, he would be entitled to better treatment in jail, the court said.
