during the initial planning of 1971 , the main objective was to gain as much of territory in east pakistan and establish an interim govt there

but as the war commenced the objective was changed to capture Dacca. India convayed to Russia that it will take 10-15 days to liberate Dacca... We needed Russian support not only in terms of arms and ammunition but also to veto any thing against India in security council..

If India Invaded west pakistan,, then US would have definitely intervened in the war to save Pakistan from more humiliating defeat which would make matters worse . so India refrained from going deep into west pakistan

And in regards to why India has not bargained POK for 93000 POWs, Indira Gandhi gave chance ( good will) to Butto. Indira did not wanted another Military govt in PAK. so she did not push Butto on the POK issue

what made difference in the 62 war is that Chinese not only invaded aruncahal pradesh from yunan province but also from the Burma border... Burmese govt has a poor control over naga hills which was in the border of India, Burma and China.... IB never expected Chinese to come from there

And the worst part was Nehru's/ V.K menon Forward policy... He not even listen the then COAS Gen thimmaya in this regard

after chinese occupation of tibet. China said that it will not honor the pact and started intrusions into Indian side of the border

Nehru believed that by showing assertiveness he can ward off Chinese intrusions,,, so made Indian amy to set up forward posts will ill equipped and un prepared soldiers....this was a disaster.. the Chinese launched a full offensive along the border .
