I felt this is an excellent even thought it is written by a local website...... Chala varaku true anipinchindi.... But after all i am not against Sachin Tendulkar - He is my favourite Cricketer.

The Prime Minister’s Office tweaked with the guidelines for awarding ‘Bharat Ratna” probably just to make personalities like “Sachin Tendulkar” eligible for it, on public demand.

The new criteria make any human being who has excelled in just any field of human endeavor. That means even our own Babu Mohan or Bramhanandam deserve the award for making the largest possible audience crack with laughter and entertain so much that no one else did like them. It means one should excel in some field of human endeavor, be it for even introducing a porn star in a reality show to make its TRPs soar and people get entertained.

This brings us to ponder over whether Sachin Tendulkar deserves “Bharat Ratna”, the highest civilian honour, which to my understanding, is given to those who have sacrificed their all comforts to serve the society and to take this nation forward.

Though, Sachin Tendulkar has played many a match winning innings for nation and is a great player, he is paid handsomely for his deeds on the sporting field, and for entertaining the cricket lovers of this country.

Sachin Tendulkar plays cricket. He inspires youngsters to play cricket, but what else? Is that enough for a person to be given a BHARAT RATNA? Just for entertainment? Can anybody be given such awards for endorsing ‘Coca-cola” ‘Pepsi” and for being brand ambassador for many commercial goods?

Bharat Ratna is the “highest civilian” award, it should only be given to the persons who made selfless effort for direct social change, for possessing “selflessness”—the human virtue which makes a particular person do something for a better future for the humankind, above himself. It should not be given for stars that provide pure entertainment or be symbols of sporting excellence. [b]There should be separate awards for great sports personalities like Sachin who excel in them[/b]. Therefore, Sachin Tendulkar, a leader of sportsmen, an entertainer of masses cannot—should not—compete for an award that has been given to Mother Teresa, should not contend for an award given to a leader of men (Jayaprakash Narayan) and an educator of masses (Radhakrishnan).

It appears that by demanding for Bharat Ratna for Sachin the Sports Star entertainer, we the nation is giving undue importance to the “entertainment”. The pointless importance given to entertainment in India is too alarming for a country still blotted by numerous problems in all spheres. In developing Nation like ours priorities need to be set. Sachin may be awarded the Bharat Ratna for his charitable trusts and his philanthropic deeds, if any, but there is absolutely no point in bestowing such award upon an individual for sporting talent. It is a case of cheating ourselves—a case of placing our fanatic emotions over sensible brains.

There is a reason the number of Bharat Ratnas have gone down in the recent decade – and the government has made a mockery of the award by starting to award it to pure entertainers and musicians. That is not what the award was meant for. It is reserved for people who have made immense contribution towards the betterment of the country.

Sachin’s contributions in cricketing arena hardly helped India to advance as developing nation and its betterment(except make its team one of the top test playing nation), other than help him join the list of the highest tax payers of this country. He is an embodiment of “Market Consciousness”. He is the picture of everything wrong about the Indian attitude. He always crumbles under pressure, which is a highly negative attitude. Even the world cup could have been won without him this year.

He is said to be inspiring National sentiment in cricket and thus help in national integration through cricket, but his presence probably increased “Maharashtra Bias” in Indian cricket.

He is no doubt an extraordinary cricketer, but behind his extraordinary achievements, there is an extraordinary selfishness to hog all the limelight. His desperate attempts and clamour to evade tax liability on a super luxury car that he got as gift in the past proves the kind of greed and selfishness he is made up of.

Therefore, the “field of human endeavor” needs to be defined urgently. What we see is merely a redefinition of the eligibility of the award recipient, probably in order to suit the demands of the nation that loves Sachin Tendulkar. The new eligibility is obviously, flawed. No award on earth can have eligibility so general, so vague. There has to be a separate award for entertainment, another for sports, another for literature, a different award for journalism, a new one for art, yet another for political genius, and another for leadership. No, there just cannot be an award for everyone.

The general idea behind the Award is to recognize the significant contribution of any individual whose work benefits the society. In that sense social workers, RTI activists, scientists, literary persons deserve this honour more than Sachin whose “personal achievements” are nothing to do with the betterment of society.

The award is not only about achievement in a particular field. Factors like at what cost, how the achievement made, impeccable credentials and character of the achiever also significant in deciding the recipient. On that account Sachin might be a great sports personality at an individual level but as a human being he is hardly on par with other personalities that fit the criteria of the award.

Today, our country is standing at crossroads. We need people who can give direction to the country and take it forward. It is such people who should be given Bharat Ratna, even if they are dead and giving it to people who have just an entertaining relevance, like cricketers and film stars, is making a mockery of the award.

Compete cheyatam ante.... kavali antam ee kadu kada baa..... even silent means the other way.... He can say he doesnt deserve it if he feels so, Untill he is silent it means he is competing for it.....
