Modifying already existing source file definitions is not recommended...... you can do that but......... later you will face issues......... If you want to add new attributes to the source definition... Always reimport

A good suggestion for you to validate. I guess you get .XML and .XSD files everyday(if it is daily load)

1. validate existing XSD against new XSD
2. validate XML against XSD.

For your question, you can add new attributes to existing source with xslt(google it) feature
