TV9 & HMTV Then, TV5 Now

The Indian News channels have taken journalism to new low levels. The propping up of hundreds of news channels every year led to intense competition among all the news channels who are on the prowl for uncovered news.

Andhra Pradesh is no different. There are right now around a dozen news channels like TV9, ETV, TV5, NTV, HMTV etc. At first there was only ETV and later TV9 joined the race. Initially for the first few days, TV9 started reporting ideal news, but to increase their TRP ratings they started showing some useless and disgusting programs like "Trisha's bathroom scene". But it also did good programs too in between.

The recent Telangana crisis was an example how low the channels can stoop to in reporting news. TV9, HMTV and Zee news channels started reporting even minor incidents just to rise the tempers and increase their TRP ratings. For example the news channels eagerly took interviews of people who damaged buses and telecasted them repeatedly. They also repeatedly telecasted the inflammatory speeches of the politicians. In fact there is an open rumor that channels pay these leaders to say such things so that these channels telecast the news and thereby increase their TRP ratings. Even if just two or three persons were doing dharna, the news channels made that it look as if hundreds were doing the dharna. In fact HMTV and Zee channels glorified the damage to the public and the private properties. HMTV is in fact owned by a Telangana Velama who is a close relative of KCR and Zee News (AP division) is headed by a Reddy from Mehaboobnagar district. So these two news channels have vested interests in glorifying the damages to the buses, private properties etc during the Telangana agitation. In fact some political analysts commented that the "Bus Fare" increase should in fact be levied on these channels since these channels only glorified the events, instead of appealing for calm and thereby making more people come out and do more damage.

Now TV5 is the latest to join the party. Right now the viewership for TV9 and ABN are increasing while that of ETV, TV5 etc are just stagnating. Now the TV5 in order to increase their TRP ratings has brought out a news about "YSR's Death" based on a Russian website's story. The story about the mysterious death of the late CM was published just one day after the untimely death of YSR. Even in the news article of "Exile.ru" the writer clearly mentioned it's story is just a "speculation over a hypothesis". This itself should have alerted the TV channel to take care before publishing the story.

Right now the Supreme Court is examining the modalities of the news reporting and whether they should be any limit about telecasting any particular type of news.
