Pawan Kalyan sidelined?

Of all the parties wracked by desertions and rebellion by disappointed ticket-seekers, Praja Rajyam is the worst hit. Fires of rebellion have broken out in just about every section of the party, every district of the state. First up, fan clubs are up in arms all over the state bemoaning the fact that years of garlanding Chiranjeevi’s pictures on the first day of his film releases have fetched them no tickets at all.

Party guru and core committee member C Anjaneya Reddy, a Buddhist who is not given to flashes of temper, has already put in his papers. Desperate missions were sent to Reddy to retain him in the party on Sunday. Disappointed former MLA Masala Eranna is sitting on a fast in front of the party office in Hyderabad, lamenting that no top leader has visited him even after he fainted two days ago.

Similarly, the heads of the Praja Rajyam women’s wing and the Dalit wing have both made it clear that they are leaving the party. No major leader of the party other than Chiranjeevi and his brother-in-law Allu Aravind seems to be happy with the ticket distribution process. Not even brother Pawan Kalyan. Not even senior advisers P Mitra and Parakala Prabhakar. The talk in the party is the rift between Pawan Kalyan and Allu Aravind.

Kalyan, the hot-blooded younger brother of Chiranjeevi is a bit of a maverick who takes politics seriously. A fan of Che Guevara, he is the only man in the upper echelons of the party with a wider perspective of the politics. Aravind on the hand is the classic backroom manager, the kind of man who aspires to nothing greater than winning power.

Sources say that Kalyan is said to be of the view that as a party of change, Praja Rajyam ought to have rewarded people who have stuck by the party and done work on the ground rather than be seduced by realtors and defectors. The differences were brought to the fore when Aravind nixed candidates that Kalyan had recommended to the party’s screening committee. As head of the party’s youth wing, Yuva Rajyam, Pawan Kalyan recommended young candidates to seats in Medak, Pargi, Ramagundam, Uppal, Medchal, Adilabad but this was ignored by Aravind and two of his advisers.

What Kalyan is unable to digest is while his recommendations have been spurned, other leaders have been able to get their candidates in. Mitra managed to get his nominees tickets in Pattipadu, Huzurnagar, and Nagarkurnool. P Shiv Shankar was able to get tickets for his son Vinay and his supporters in Amberpet, Musheerabad and Sanatnagar. Devender Goud was able to get tickets for 13 of his people.

Ostensibly due to his hot-headed nature, Pawan Kalyan has been taken off the centre stage of the party’s election campaign. All this has set up a confrontation between Kalyan and Aravind. What’s insult to Kalyan’s injury is the fact that Aravind has managed to foist his relative M Vijaya Nirmala in Nuzvid.

An open confrontation between Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and his easily combustible brother can bring the wheels off the Praja Rajyam’s campaign.
