Basically, you can use a numeric pointer when you need to create a generic DS on a table or a view (numeric pointer does not exist for an FM-based extractor) in which there is a field that acts as a counter. For instance, if you have a table (say, Sales document number) wherein you know that values in a particular field (in this case EQUNR) will keep increasing as records (equipments) are added to the system, you can use this field as a numeric pointer.

So what the system will do is that in the init load, it will pull all the data in the table and record the numeric pointer value of the last (highest) record. Say the highest document number value in the table was 1027. The next time the delta is run, it will pick up records having document number > 1027, and so on. So in this manner, this field will be used for pointing towards the record till which you had extracted last time.
