Sale of colour TV sets in the State in March alone posted 27 p.c. growth

HYDERABAD: The free colour television scheme for the families below poverty line (BPL) offered by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has not affected the sales.

The sale of colour television sets in the State in March alone posted 27 per cent growth whereas the party had claimed that there was significant drop in purchases with people preferring to wait till the TDP returned to power.

Even in Tamil Nadu, where the free colour TV scheme is being implemented by the DMK government, there was no decline in the number of sets purchased. On the other hand, the sales went up by 28 per cent. This information was furnished by R. Zutshi, Deputy Managing Director of Samsung India Ltd in response to a question at a press conference here on Tuesday about the impact of the free colour TV scheme on the regular sales and whether Samsung participated in the programme in Tamil Nadu.

“We don’t make the TVs offered under the scheme at all,” he pointed out.

In fact, the Tamil Nadu government asked Samsung also to give a price quote for the 14-inch colour TVs given to the BPL families, but the company declined. if we are asked to give a quote by any other government in future, we will respond the same way.” The Tamil Nadu government has so far placed order for 5.5 million colour TVs. The flat panel TVs, high-end LCDs and other advanced models were indeed picking up, said Mr. Zutshi
