The announcement came as they arrested a man accused of tricking an unspecified number of people out of millions of dollars by using an internet site. Kola Venkat Krishnamohan is accused of cheating banks and other bodies by making false claims of winning a $20m euro lottery. Mr Krishnamohan, 45, was arrested on Monday morning in the town of Vijayawada after a ten day search by the state police and the Interpol. The search was launched following complaints lodged by several banks and financial institutions. It all began last November when Mr Krishnamohan, a successful businessman, created a sensation by claiming to have won about $20m in a euro lottery. [b]Fake website[/b] He claimed he had picked up the winning lottery ticket while waiting for a flight at London's Heathrow airport. Police said that to convince people of his false claim, Mr Krishnamohan had launched a website. Internet users who logged in at "[email protected]" got details of how he had won the jackpot. Police said Mr Krishnamohan then used his newly won financial clout to take money from unsuspecting banks and other financial institutions, by promising to return the loan at a higher interest rate. According to some estimates, Mr Krishnamohan cheated people of about $2m. [b]Donations to the police[/b] The police chief of Vijayawada, Sudip Laktakia, said the media is also to be blamed for a fraud of this magnitude. Mr Laktakia said newspapers published stories about Mr Krishnamohan winning the Euro lottery without even bothering to cross check whether such a lottery ever existed. He said these stories generated a hype which helped Mr Krishnamohan fool people with ease. But the con-man was indeed a smooth player. In his heyday he donated $250,000 to the state's governing Telugu Desam party. He had also donated more than $2,000 to the Vijayawada police. The police and the Telugu Desam party have since decided to return the money to those to whom it actually belongs. Investigators launched a search for Mr Krishnamohan earlier this month, after a £28,500 cheque drawn on a London branch of Barclays Bank bounced. Sudeep Lakhtakia, the Vijaywada commissioner of police, said: "We had alerted Interpol as well as immigration authorities and asked for the cancellation of his passport.
