Hardware unlocks means you have to have custom chip inserted under your regular sim ..to do that you need new sim holder...you have to dial 112 when you restart your phone...I used this last time when i went to India ...check this out

Software unlock makes your phone like a unlocked phone..you don't need any hardware..all you have to do is, insert sim and you are good to go..

Apple is giving Dev teams hard time to exploit unlocks so most of the current unlock methods are hardware based

which carrier in UK ? If its CDMA based we can't unlock ...In USA, all GSM ipad's are unlocked
