Simple till u reach india carry them in your hand luggage as many as u can, no one cares in USA or ur stop before india....

after collecting ur baggage in INDIA transfer them to ur check in bags... here point is customs scan ur hand luggae and laptop bags but will not scan ur check-in bags if u go through the green channel.....

they will ask u to go to red channel even u are carring any drinks(duty free)
