With the party president in jail, the YSRCP has been indulging in mind games to destablise the ruling party and the main Opposition by encouraging defections and routing for another round of by-polls.

The first Telugu Desam Party wicket, Kodali Nani of Gudivada in Krishna district, that fell on Monday, is not an isolated case. There are many more in the line who are biding their time.

For instance, Uppuleti Kalpana, a TDP politburo member hailing from Pamarru in Krishna district, who met YSRCP MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, will meet Vijayamma on Wednesday.

The initial reaction in Gudivada and the TDP to the actions of Nani who met Vijayamma, honourary president of YSRCP in Hyderabad and the consequent suspension from the party notwithstanding, a number of MLAs in Krishna and Guntur districts are confabulating and quickly doing their mathematics before taking the plunge.

The refrain in the YSRCP circles is that there would be another set of by-elections before Jaunary, 2013 for more than fifteen seats.

Besides Rangarao of Vijayanagaram, Alla Nani of Eluru and Kodali Nani of Gudivada who made their decision known, there are at least ten MLAs who are being encouraged to cross over.

While the YSRCP is trying to enlist the support of a particular dominant community in Krishna and Guntrur districts for an image makeover giving an impression that the party is not controlled by only one community, Mr Bhumana Karunakara Reddy, MLA, has taken up the cause of making Tirupati, the pilgrim centre, free of alcohol, demanding that prohibition be imposed in the holy town.

It is an attempt to win the hearts of the devotees and also to erase the impression that YSRCP is led by leaders who only believe in Christianity.

Though there were reports that opposition to Nani in Gudivada is increasing, he did his homework carefully before coming to Hyderabd.

He knows that Junior NTR would publicly disown him. But as a politician with a long way to go, he thought of his own survival and took the decision to leave TDP after a lot of deliberations, followers of Nani contend.

He is believed to have held discussions with Dalit and Muslim leaders besides other backward class leaders for some weeks.

He made the decision only after taking the consent of different local leaders, they said. Nani and Vangaveeti Radha left Hyderabad on Tuesday and will hold a press conference at Gudivada on Wednesday. Nani, Radha and Vallabhaneni Vamsi are good friends.

Vamsi won't be far behind in joining Nani to hoist a flag of revolt against the leadership of TDP, sources close to Nani say.

Radha is also a close pal of Yalamanchili Ravi, who defeated Devineni Nehru in Vijayawada East in 2009 on TRP ticket.

His party has since merged with the Congress. Radha is trying to persuade Ravi to join the exodus. Vamsi has been asking for Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat.

Another leader in Krishna district who wants to go to Lok Sabha is Chinnam Ramakotaiah of Nuzvid who recently created a flutter in TDP by announcing that he won't contest in the next elections.

TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu spoke to him but the MLA was not convinced that he should continue with the TDP. He is likely to join YSRCP and not the Congress as rumoured.

Other MLAs who are on the radar of the YSRCP leadership are Adinarayana Reddy of Jammalmadugu (who left the Congress to join YSRCP and went back to the Congress), Y Balanagi Reddy of Mantralayam in Kurnool district.

Another MLA from the same district, Katasani Rambhoopal Reddy, who is closely related to Gali Janardana Reddy, is also said to be in touch with the YSRCP leaders.

Katasani brothers earlier joined YSRCP and went back to the Congress. These moves are basically meant to give an impression that the YSRCP is popular in spite of the fact the leader is in jail for more than a month.

It is also meant to keep the Congress pot as well as the TDP pot boiling. This is part of the mind games that the party has been forced to plan in view of the changed scenario.
