Today I am going to write about some questions and thoughts that have been going on in my head for a while. Just take it I am playing the devil's advocate or take it as food for thought. I am not saying things should be that way - obviously people fought against the old system to get to where we are today, but I am left wondering whether we gained or lost in the process.

Going by the threads here, I am beginning to feel that "education" has really not brought women any advantages (except the ability to earn). In fact this very ability is often being used to her disadvantage. Look up any matrimonial ad. Wanted fair, beautiful, cultured, homely (thank God they did not say "domesticated"), well-qualified, WORKING bride for ..... Girls in govt. jobs/bank jobs preferred. READ wanted woman to look after the home like my mother and mil did, beautiful enough to seduce my son (till the requisite number of children have been born, then return son to parents), cultured - so she will not rebel against anything that is patently unfair or perceived by her to be so. She should be well-qualified, so we can show her off as a trophy, she can rake in the moolah, in a govt. job/bank job so she can bring in loans whenever we order her to.

This is just what we read so often. PILs insisting on the dil working, handing in her entire salary or a huge chunk of it ..... She may not help her parents. Some posts also clearly mention that mil feels dil should leave behind parents physically, emotionally and financially after marriage. Of course, financially leave behind implies she owes them nothing, but they can keep gifting her, her husband and ILs various things endlessly. Not that she gets off on the home front either. Handle the day to day cooking (only fresh will do) morning before leaving and after coming back, produce heirs for the family, don't expect pil to help out and if they do, worship them.

So have they really benefitted in any way? Has the ability to earn large sums of money really brought them any freedom? Are they able to quit and walk out without a second thought even though they are "economically and financially independent"?

Flash back to 80-100 years ago. Child marriage was the practice. The girl was married off at the age of 7 or 8. She went to her ILs place at a tender age. Thereafter the responsibility of bringing her up and taking care of her was fully transferred. She grew up in that home, learned their ways and traditions from the world go, had minimal emotional bonds with parents, did not earn, still did all the housework, bore children, bore any ill treatment just the same and had to continue with the same husband and in the same house no matter what. Her parents had to spend only on her wedding, stridhan and a few festivals. End of story.

So whither Indian woman? Has she truly "progressed" or has she only succeeded in getting herself more shackled over the years?
