War Between Nara – Nandamuri Families Heats Up

Hyderabad, July 13: When N T Rama Rao has launched the TDP he said he has launched the new party only to rid the country of the Congress party’s hereditary politics. Why should a son or daughter of a Prime Minister become a Prime Minister, he thundered. People applauded him and gave him power to fight this political malady.

But contrary to the very purpose with which he has launched his party, his own party is being ruled only by members of his family since 1982, when he has launched it.

Now the third generation is fighting to grab control of the party. On one side is Lokesh, NTR’s daughter Bhuvaneswari’s son. On the other is Jr. NTR, his son Hari Krishna’s son. As Lokesh happens to be the son of NTR’s daughter, the fight has now become a show down between Nara and Nandamuri clans.

All those concerned with the TDP are disheartened at the deteriorating strength of the party. In 2009 the party lost power by just one percent vote margin. Chiranjeevi’s entry into politics and the anti-incumbency vote he had split was then said to be the reason for TDP’s debacle. However after 2009, the party has not won even a single by-election. When the party lost elections in the Telangana region, it has consoled itself that the failure was because of the regional sentiment. However the party could not put up an impressive performance even in Kovuru, Nellore district, where its own rebel Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumara Reddy has won as the YSR Congress candidate. Now in the recent by elections to 18 assembly and one Lok Sabha seats, the party could not win even a single seat.

As Chiranjeevi stood as a stumbling block between TDP and power in 2009, Jagan may play the same role in 2014 general elections, say analysts.

Though the YSR Congress leaders are stating that they would storm into power in 2014, TDP has become sure that whether that happens or not, Jagan would mar its own chances of coming back to power. So the party appears to be planning for the 2019 elections.

TDP is in a very week position at the moment. It was never so weak as this in the party’s entire history.

Buoyed by the UP example where SP supreme Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh achieved a landslide victory for his party, Naidu appears to be bent upon introducing his own son Lokesh to take on Congress and YSR Congress.

The Nandamuri family also appears to have lost its hope on the 2014 elections and started aiming at the 2019 general elections, by when Jr. NTR would become senior and mature enough to head the party.

Though Chandrababu Naidu has started all out efforts to win the 2014 elections, operation Akarsh for the BCs being his latest brain child, even most committed party leaders are not hoping for any magic in 2009. The Telangana factor in this region and the Jagan factor in the Seemandhra region would surely stand in the way of TDP’s victory, they confess. Party seniors are stating that if the TDP comes to power in 2009, there would not be any one who would be able to challenge the authority of Naidu. But nothing short of a miracle could ensure victory to the party in 2014, several senior leaders are privately admitting. However, if the party fails, there would surely be pressure on Naidu. He may be even forced to quit as by then the party would have lost three general elections under his leadership. Some seniors are stating that Naidu also knew about his fate if the party loses in 2014. They are stating that Naidu would himself relinquish the post and has been planning to groom his son Lokesh to take over the reins after 2014, sources in the TDP say. Interestingly, it is not who would win the 2014 elections that is being discussed in TDP. It is who would lead the party after 2014 is the question that is being hotly discussed in party circles.

When Kodali Nani left the party, it was Jr. NTR who had responded even before Naidu did. He said he would not leave the TDP launched by his grand-father until he breathed his last. He has denied that he was behind Nani’s decision to leave the party. It is being said that the Nandamuri family was hoping that all those who might now leave would surely come back by 2019 elections and there would be no dearth of leaders when Jr. NTR takes over in 2019, say these sources.
