Indian It's Golden Era Is Over: Value Research

[Copying some content which is worth reading]
It would have been nice had India been able to develop a technology industry where there was a large eco-system of software start-ups doing technologically interesting products; but the profit streams of our big IT services firms never seemed to be able to contribute to anything venturesome.

Recently, I read an article about this year's Google's Code Jam contest, which is a sort of Olympics for programming skills. At the qualifying stage, 17% of the contestants were Indians. By the third round, as the competition intensified, Indians were down to 0.7%.

Although India began with the highest number of participants, just three Indians lasted till round three, compared to 83 Chinese, 77 Russians, 36 Japanese, 25 Americans, 21 Poles, 13 Belarusians, 11 South Koreans etc. In fact, the code Olympics look much like the sports Olympics. So much for the IT superpower.

Its a problem with our education system. First we need to focus on that and every thing will fall in place. Hopefully next generation will be creative.

Wow! I thought this thread would become extinct. Great!
Education system? I dont completely agree with this. May be you are right. I am sure most of the participants are software professionals who are day long engaged in the consulting work which has no place for innovation. If organizations provide some free time for example, google, which has a 2 hour time dedicated to do some innovation or do some creativity work(not to mention thats how the gmail was born), then probably there would be atleast appreciable percentage of indians. Now, should we blame the organizations which constrained the thinking of the professionals? Awareness is another aspect.

Most of us including me dont learn any kind of scripting or coding with enthu we learn it either because we have to pass our exam or to get a job, and once we either of this are done we do not show interest in learning advanced techniques and while we learn we do not do it from the basics we do it as a exam point of view or interview point of view that is one of the reason most of us face problems when we land at the client place we do not have practical knowledge we have theoritical or bookish which is good only for exams or to answer questions but not to win a practical situation
