Senior Maruti officials met in Gurgaon on Thursday seeking a new strategy to de-risk the Manesar plant after worker unrest led to the death of one of its senior officials there. Workers set fire to the plant after one of the team leaders allegedly made a discriminatory remark against one of the employees.
Sources said Maruti may shift part of the diesel car manufacturing to another unit.
Cars that may be moved out include Diesel Swift and Dzire.
Another board meeting will be held next week to discuss a broader strategy.
Meanwhile, the Haryana administration is making efforts to revive unit. Haryana Industries Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala on Friday said strict action would be taken against workers.
He added that the violence appeared to be premeditated.
The Japanese Embassy too on Friday strongly condemned the incident saying, "We strongly hope that the State of Haryana would administer, according to law, prompt and just punishment to the perpetrators and effectively enforce law and order so that such incidents would not be repeated."
Meanwhile, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said moving the plant was not a solution. Condemning the violence, Executive Director Sugata Sen said issues should be addressed properly so that they didn't recur.
"We have taken up the matter with the state government," he said.
He added, "Maruti is not concerned about losses but about the injured in the hospital. One person has died."
