Ramoji Rao, chairman of the Eenadu group and Ambani of the oil major Reliance Industries.

Union Minister of state for finance, S S Palannimanickam has written to Congress MP Undavalli Arun Kumar stating that the ED was examining the matter and obtaining the relevant data from the Reserve Bank of India.

Arun Kumar had earlier submitted a representation to the finance ministry seeking an enquiry by the CBI and the ED into Ramoji Rao’s alleged involvement in many financial transactions including the sale of stakes in ETV to Reliance group, which amount to money laundering.

Reliance had purchased stakes in ETV channels for Rs. 2,604 crore through its subsidiaries Equator Trading Enterprises and Anu Trading Pvt Ltd. RIL had effectively bailed out Ramoji Rao by arranging these funds through Nimesh Kampani, who is facing charges of financial fraud, when the courts had directed the media baron to immediately pay the deposits back to the investors of Margadarsi, the chit fund company he has been running.

Later, Reliance sold ETV shares to TV 18 network. RIL itself arranged funds to TV 18 to buy ETV shares. Mukhesh Ambani’s company had kept the deal with Ramoji Rao a secret, till YSR Congress leader Y S Vijayamma filed a case against the TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu and made Ramoji a co-respondent.

Arun Kumar then questioned how shares were brought at an astronomical price of Rs. 5,28,630 each when Ramoji Rao’s companies were incurring losses. The Congress MP also wrote to the Union Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni to withdraw licenses and uplink permissions granted to Ramoji Rao. He said that up linking of ETV channels through TV 18 also should not be allowed. Besides the ETV – Reliance deal, Arunkumar also wanted a thorough investigation into Ramoji Rao’s Hindu Undivided Family investing Rs. 1,688 crore between November 2, 2007 and January 3, 2008, either as fixed deposits in HDFC or in Mutual funds.[/font]
