@threadstarter.....normally cap gap is to bridge the gap b/w h1b approval and opt end date....

so
1)if ur h1b is not approved by the cap gap date then u shud stop working(end date on ur cap gap i20) until u get a approval.

2)here ur case is approved...so i think u shudnot work for those days until ur start date.

no need nenu I20 lekunda ne unna..My OPT expired on June 10th and I never took a OPT I20 for extension.

got H1 approved on May 25th..start date OC 1st.....appaudu varaku legal gane pani chesa...

nenuu ide situation face chesanu,cap-gap lo h1b petition Sept 30 varaku approve kaledu, then I stopped going to the office , and then on Oct'3 my h1b is approved , then i started working from Oct'3 , but my approved petition say the validity from Oct'1 , so you are still legal as for the stay in usa is concerened .....

having i20 is not mandatory but nuvvu mee school lo aithe inform chesi untavu kadha ila h1 vachindhi...and change of status effective from oct 1st ani...and they'll update ur sevis accordingly..

naku maa school DSO cheppindhi u r leggaly extended to work until sep 30th on cap gap and should stop working if u dont get an approval by that time ani...
