GOLIMAR Posted July 26, 2012 Author Report Posted July 26, 2012 Today is the 13th anniversary of the Kargil War which was fought between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district which is located in Kashmir in which Pakistan tried together with Kashmiri militants to occupy the Kargil district, but in the end they suffered a major defeat and the Pakistani Army retreated from India to the successful military operation conducted by the Indian Army and diplomatic pressure from the West. The war lasted from the 3rd of May when the first Pakistani soldiers infiltrated the Kargil district till the 26th of July when the Indian Army declared that all Pakistani soldiers were evicted.During the war India had 30000 soldiers,527 killed,1363 wounded,on the other side Pakistan had 5000 soldiers, between 453 and 4000 killed and more than 665 wounded. Before the Partition of India in 1947,Kargil was the part of the Baltistan district of Ladakh which had diverse linguistic, ethnic and religious groups which lived in isolated valleys separated by some of the Worldβs highest mountains. In the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 Kargil became a part of India and the province of Jammu and Kashmir, while after the defeat of Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971,the two countries signed the Simla Agreement in which the two countries have promised that it will not engage in a military conflict with respect to their boundaries. The town of Kargil is located 205 km from Srinagar (Summer seasonal capital of Jammu and Kashmir)and like other areas in the Himalayas it has a temperate climate. One of the reasons Kargil was targeted is it because it is the terrain surrounding it,lent itself to pre-emptive seizure of unoccupied military positions, with tactical vital positions and well-defended posts atop the peaks, a defender would enjoy advantages to the attacker which due to far higher ratio would also have difficulties due to high attitudes and freezing temperatures. Also Kargil is 173 km located from Skadru which is controlled by Pakistan and was capable to provide logistical and artillery support to Pakistani combatants. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 both countries have engaged in armed conflicts over the Siachen Glacier during the 1980s in which both countries wanted to establish military outposts on mountain ridges, however during the 1990s escalating tensions and conflicts due to the Pakistani support in the insurgency in Kashmir and nuclear tests conducted by both sides in 1998 have led to the signing of the Lahore Declaration in which both countries promised that the Kashmir conflict will be solved peacefully, but it will become a dead letter on a paper because the Pakistani Army launched Operation Badr.During the Winter of 1998-1999 the Pakistani Armed Forces have secretly trained and sent Pakistani troops and paramilitary forces into the Indian side of the LOC (Line Of Control) in order to sever the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and cause the Indian forces to retreat from the Siachen Glacier in order to force India a favorable deal for Pakistan when in comes to the Kashmir conflict.Another reason was the internationalization of the Kashmir conflict which would secure a speedy resolution and another reason it would be to boost the morale of the Kashmir rebels. The blueprint for the Kargil War was set up by the Pakistani Army and it offered during the 1980s and 1990s to General Mohammed Zia Ul-Haq and Benazir Bhutto, but they were rejected due to the fear of an all out war with India. The plans were reactivated in October 1998 when Pervez Musharraf was appointed as the chief of staff of the Pakistani Army with the knowledge of Nawaz Sharif which was the Prime Minister of Pakistan during the Kargil War.During the Winter season it is usual due to extreme cold that both sides abandoned some forward posts on their respective sides of the LOC and reduced patrolling of areas which could be used for infiltration. When weather conditions become less severe than both sides would reoccupy the forward posts and patrolling resumed. But in February 1999 the Pakistani Army reoccupied its positions in the LOC,but also sent some forces to occupy the posts in the Indian side of the LOC.Troops from the Special Service Group and of the Northern Light Infantry which sent four to seven battalions which were supported by Afghan and Kashmiri mujahideen have set up bases on the vantage points of the Indian-controlled region. The incursions were not reported till the 3rd of May by local shepherds due to a number of reasons:Indian patrols were not sent into some areas of the areas infiltrated by Pakistani forces and heavy artillery from Pakistan which provided cover for the infiltrators. The Indian Army believing that is just only a group of jihadists has infiltrated the area sent a patrol under the command of Capt.Saurabh Kalia which was ambushed and after that it was discovered that Pakistan invaded the Indian side of the LOC.The Indian government launched Operation Vijay in which sent 30000 soldiers, while the Indian Air Force launched Operation Safed Sagar and the Indian Navy prepared to blockade Pakistani ports to cut off supply routes. The Indian attacks were aimed at the controlling hills of the NH1D which was the highway from Leh to Srinagar with the priority to the stretches of the highway near the town of Kargil. After the targeting of Tiger Hill and the Tololing complex in Dras, the Indian Army the Batalik-Turtok sub-sector which provided the access to Siachen Glacier there were located two strategic positions controlled by the Pakistani Army which were Point 5353 and Point 4590.Point 5353 was the highest feature in the Dras sector from which the Pakistani troops viewed the NH1D,while Point 4590 nearest point of the NH1D which the Indian Army captured on the 14th of June and it was significant for the Indian Army which after the recapture of the hills which overlooked the NH1D,turned to drive the invading force back across the LoC.The Battle of Tololing switched the combat in Indiaβs favor, besides that Pakistani troops were aided by the Kashmiri mujahideen and on the 4th of July after a 11 hour battle, the Indian Army recaptured Tiger Hill and in two months of the conflict India recovered 80% of the area which was invaded by Pakistan. While the war ended on the 26th of July when the Indian Army declared that all Pakistani invaders were evicted from Kargil. In the aftermath India besides that won the war, also it experienced an economic growth, there was also a surge in patriotism across the country, while the World supported the India Prime Minister A.B.Vajpayee which his party the BJP scored a landslide victory in the elections, also it boosted relations with Israel and the USA.On the contrary Pakistan suffered in economic terms and there was a threat of International isolation, even its ally China condemned Pakistan for going to war against India and at home Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was condemned by Benazir Bhutto which stated that the war was a blunder.
