Spam I think. I got same email.

its not a spam...

The claim is that Netflix disclosed what subscribers were watching. I believe Netflix is now either deleting or decoupling viewing info after one year of cancelling the service.
Oh yeah, and the lawyers get up to 25% of the settlement.

oh avuna... mostly 99% andariki vachindi anamataa... it seems Netflix is storing the data of the user even after they discontinue the subscription like cc info, watched movie list,etc...so the lawyers/vpc people sued them..so they will get the amount ..manaki emi vastadho emo?

To answer the question "What should we do?" Took me a bit to dig through all this and figure things out. But in layman's words, you can:

1) Do Nothing.

If you do nothing, you'll be part of the settlement. Basically, you'll agree that Netflix should pay $9 million to some charities you can suggest by writing letters to three mailing addresses.

You will get NO MONEY, NO FREE SUBSCRIPTION MONTHS, NO FREE DVDS*. You will also give up rights to sue Netflix in the future, according to the website.

But the people who made the lawsuit against Netflix, most likely money-starved lawyers and their plaintiffs looking for money in this economy, will be making "up to 25% of the Settlement Fund, [which is $9 million, so $2,250,000]" plus $25,000 in "out of pocket costs" and $30,000 "collective incentive award."

So the people directly involved in the lawsuit would be getting approx $2,305,000.

2) Request Exclusion.

If you want to be excluded from the settlement, you basically won't endorse Netflix agreeing to pay $9 million + $55,000. This may mean there would be a full blown lawsuit which may cost either party a lot more, and end ambiguously, but you wouldn't have to worry about any of that because you're not involved**.

To request exclusion, you need to write a letter requesting exclusion from "the Class in In re Netflix Privacy Litigation, No. 5:11-cv-00379-EJD."

"Your exclusion request must include your name, address, telephone number, signature, and a signed statement to the effect that: “I/We hereby request to be excluded from the proposed Settlement Class in In re Netflix Privacy Litigation.” Your exclusion request must be postmarked no later than November 14, 2012, and sent to the Settlement Administrator at the following address:

This would cost you about $0.75 in a stamp, envelop, paper and ink, and a trip to a mailbox.

3) Complain

You write to express dissatisfaction with the settlement as it is.

To complain, it appears you have to write to 3 mailing addresses (listed in the FAQs below). This would probably cost you approximately $2.00 in stamps, envelop, paper and ink, and a trip to a mailbox.

* Potentially biased remarks: Keep in mind Netflix losing $9 million may actually translate to lower service for us, or maybe increased fees in the future.
