Just to add on to it ... Currency exchanges are mostly calculated W.R.T the resources that country has .. for ex britain has largest gold reserves(you know why ...)

Britain decided to withdraw gold from internal circulation after the first world war ..but it has fixed its own value of sterling at an unsustainably high rate and in the worldwide economic crisis in 1931...The United States kept the link to gold and after the Second World War the US dollar replaced the pound sterling as the key global currency

In the early 1970s the system of fixed exchange rates started to break down as a result of growing international inflation and the United States abandoned the link with gold in 1973.

So the Exchange rates between the countries has changed drastically since 1980's ... and other major contributor to that graph was our liberalization which has started only in PV's govt .. so we were really lagging when the whole west and china are liberalised ...

quite contrary to my point all the african and asian nations have more natural resources than west.. but still they have got the lowest ..because of the above points ...

i am confused whether PV's govt was responsible for inflation at tht time or was tht govt a savior frm inflation......i thought tht the then congress govt under PV saved from further crisis......but when i read abt ur liberalization point......it has to be rethought.......

Nope i dint mean that and may be explanation was little confusing , hadnt been the PV's govt policies , may be 1USD = 100Rs by now ... who knows ..I was trying to make a point  was that we have started our policies very late compared to that of other countries which we should have started long time back .. just for example ... in 1980's if you have to get a car , you nede to wait for atleast a year because eveything is being maitained by govt ...

i am huge admirer of Pv govt policies which have really changed the face of india ..
