WAR & PEACE

Shortly before Che Guevara died in 1967, he met John Lennon in Chicago, on 11th August 1966. Che Guevara took refuge in an old radio recording booth. It is here that he met Lennon incidentally. Lennon with guitar in hand, raised his eyes and before him was another figure with long hair and with dreams of freedom. Guevara could not sing but he took a guitar and sang, rather shouted about the oppressed and just causes. John listened without saying a word and Che went on and on.Neither John nor Ernesto commented anything about this strange encounter.

After the failure of a revolution in Congo in South Africa in late 1965, Che was reluctant to return to Cuba, because Castro had made public Guevara's "farewell letter"—a letter intended to only be revealed in the case of his death—wherein he severed all ties in order to devote himself to revolution throughout the world. As a result, Guevara spent the next six months living clandestinely in Dar es Salaam and Prague. During this time he compiled his memoirs of the Congo experience and wrote drafts of two more books, one on philosophy and the other on economics. He then visited several Western European countries and in 1966 visited the United States to test his new false identity papers, created by Cuban Intelligence for his later travels .It is during this travel that he met Lennon.

Much latter , by a quirk of fate ,the same week the United States was submerged in a Beatles-inspired wave of nostalgia in a concert, one of the most emblematic symbols of the time, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, appeared in the news when a Bolivian general acknowledged that the leftist revolutionary had been shot dead and has been buried, not incinerated, in Bolivia, after he was executed for his anti-government activities on 9th.of October 1967.

It is a matter of debate, whether there is more interest in the Beatles than in Che Guevara. Still, there is a converging hint of relevance here, and a sense that those years, however irretrievable they may be. If the Beatles were the icons of the deep and marvelous cultural changes of the '60s , Guevara was the archetype of the political upheaval and ideological freedom the decade ushered in.

It is believed that the song "Revolution"written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon–McCartney is a direct outcome of this meeting. The Beatles released two distinct arrangements of the song in 1968 and a slower version titled "Revolution 1" on the eponymous album The Beatles (commonly called the "White Album"). Although "Revolution" was released first, it was recorded several weeks after "Revolution 1" as a re-make specifically designed to be released as a single. A third connected piece written by Lennon is the experimental "Revolution 9", which evolved from an unused portion of "Revolution 1", and also appears on the White Album.
