Hyderabad is a city with rich heritage and cosmopolitan culture. It had world class infrastructure facilities even before it became the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The following photos are a testimony to the state-of-the-art healthcare facilities Hyderabad had before 1956.


[b]1) Osmania Hospital: OGH is one of the oldest hospitals in India located at Afzal Gunj, Hyderabad. The current building was built in 1925.[/b]

[b]2) Gandhi Hospital : Started in 1853 as Prince Edward Memorial Hospital. Name changed to Gandhi Hospital in 1956[/b]

[b]3) Kothi ENT Hospital: Was built by Raja Pratap Narsing Giriji as a 75 bedded hospital. Was taken over by Government in 1966[/b]

[b]4) Unani Hospital, Charminar:[/b] Built by Seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan in 1930. It is an architectural marvel even to this day.

[b] 5) Fever Hospital: [/b]Was established on 1915. It was shifted to Koranti in 1923. The hospitals name was changed to Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases in 1997. Its a 330 bedded hospital.

[b]6) Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda: [/b]Started in early 1900s. It was converted to a full-fledged Institute of Mental Health in 1953

[b]7) Jajgi Khanaa Hospital[/b]: Started in 1867 by the grand daughter of Nizam Mir Mahabub Ali Khan. It is a maternity hospital, which is renowned in surrounding districts if Hyderabad like Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda. Even today it serves about 1000 patients per day.

[b]8) The “MNJ Cancer Hospital & Radium Institute,”: [/b]a 40 bedded Hospital was established by Nawab Mehdi Nawaj Jung and inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 8 th December, 1955

[b]9) AP General and Chest Hospital, Erragadda: [/b]Built nearly a century ago and donated by the VII Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, the hospital is built on a sprawling 65 acre campus.

[b]10) Niloufer Hospital: [/b]This is the largest children’s hospital in Andhra Pradesh. Named after princess Niloufer Khanum Sultana (1916-1989)
This hospital was inaugrated in 1953 although the planning started in 1948.

[b]11) Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS, Punjagutta): [/b]In the late 50s Mir Osman Ali Khan was visiting Osmania General when he saw a boy,whose one leg was amputated. He suddenly stopped and enquired whether the hospital had facilities to put in artificial limb to the boy.The doctors informed him that such a facility was available in Pune. He called famous orthopedic surgeon Dr.Ranga Reddy to plan for an orthopedic hospital at Nizam’s expense.
