Question On Opt

One of my friend is on OPT-Extension. He was working as an FT for past one year. He resigned to his job yesterday hoping that he could join a another company. His interview with new company got cleared and there is little bit delay for other stuff.. It may take another week to get his startdate/offer letter. Now he is confused that how long he can stay without an employer. Do we need to update in the school ? what are the options?

better to keep the school updated if he is legally allowed to stay without job for that period...
