Reacting to Tripuraneni's allegations, an Infosys spokesperson told ET Magazine: "We can unequivocally state that there is absolutely no evidence of any sort of retaliation against or directed at Mr Tripuraneni. This investigation has confirmed that his claims are completely unfounded." The company further clarified that they had a low dependency on L1 visas and used more H1Bs.

Almost all Indian companies with sizeable business interest in the US are, however, concerned over the increasing scrutiny of visa applications, specially the L category.

"The L1B visas are typically granted to a foreign national with specialised knowledge. Hiring someone in the US for such work requires training them. An L1B candidate from India can hit the ground running from day one," says Sruthi Sagar Ananthachari, director, corporate shared services India, at IT services company CSC.

The problem, according to Ananthachari, is the several interpretations of specialised knowledge leading to higher visa denial rates.

Last year, the US embassy in India moved all its blanket L1 visa operations to the Chennai consulate general so that all the applications are administered through a single-window clearance. While this step has brought in a greater degree of consistency, it also means added expenses for the Indian employer who has to fly all employees to Chennai for the visa interviews.
