[url="http://www.nj.com/trenton"]TRENTON[/url] — Two shootings less than seven hours apart in the shadow of City Hall yesterday left one man dead and a woman wounded, police said.
It was unclear if there was any connection between the two crimes.
Police said a man was found dead across the street from City Hall before sunrise.
It was the city’s 14th homicide of the year.
A passer-by discovered the man lying on the ground near East State and North Stockton streets around 5:15 a.m., said Detective Pete Szpakowski, a police spokesman.
There were signs of trauma on the body. It wasn’t clear how long the body had been on the ground or how long the man had been dead.
While police were not immediately sure whether the victim had been shot, stabbed, or beaten to death, preliminary findings indicate he died from a gunshot wound to the chest, Sgt. Dave Cruz said.
Crime-scene detectives went to gather evidence from the area, and the intersection in front of the government building was roped off by caution tape for the majority of the morning.
The homicide victim’s name was not released last night, as investigators were still searching for next of kin to notify.
Hours after the homicide, a woman was shot in the arm less than two blocks away, police said.
The woman was sitting in a vehicle on the 200 block of East Hanover Street near the intersection with Academy Street around 11:50 a.m. when gunfire rang out.
She was hit once in the arm, Cruz said.
An ambulance took the woman to a hospital, where doctors determined she was likely to survive.
Officers took a suspect into custody at the scene. Cruz said last night the suspect was being interviewed by detectives but had not yet been charged with a crime.
The killing and shooting come seven days after an apparent home invasion in Chambersburg at the site of an alleged brothel that left 36-year-old Neemias Reyes-Gonzales dead and another man wounded.
On Saturday, 28-year-old food service worker Orlando Sanchez was gunned down in the South Ward.
And last Monday, two parents whose 5-year-old daughter died in July were charged with murder after authorities found multiple open and healing wounds on the girl’s body, many of them from a belt found during a search of the couple’s Passaic Street home, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.
