Again Australia is too racist and though getting a job is comparitively easy for IT professional in Aussie land, i hate those racist pigs...Hence i applied for Canada after hearing very positive talk about it, jobs, nature and the warm hearted ppl. Back then in 2009, IT professionals also had some valid NOC codes under which they can apply for PR directly while outside of Canada. If you are qualified then your application would be accepted and in 1-1.5 yrs you would directly get a PR (pretty much like diversity GC lottery in USA except that here you must qualify under one of those occupation codes to be accepted). After July 2010, unfortunately IT category is removed from those NOC codes under Federal immigration. now only provincial immigration (state wise untai konni immigration programs) can get you a PR in IT field irrespective of federal rules, they can grant you a PR with some "rules" ofcourse. Rules are that whichever province gave you a PR expect you to stay in that province and work in that province for atleast 2 yrs before filing for a federal pr (you will be eligible then having stayed in country for 2 yrs) so you can get the federal pr and you are free to move anywehere for work within country. ohh...typed in so much information.
You are correct.... Once you land here as PR / you get PR status in Canada, you spend 3 years and you are eligible to file for citizenship, once you file for citizenship, it takes 18 months for your citizenship to be granted (This is as per current time lines for processing applications as of today due to large number of applications.) this might increase / decrease in future. I have many friends here from my college who instead of applying to USA for MS, applied to Canadian Universities. Now most of us dont know that in Canada, once a student completes a 1 yr course can get 1 yr official work permit and who does a 2 yr course will get 3 yrs work permit from the government during which they can apply for any job under any employer. Once they work for any employer in their field of study for just 2 yrs, all they need to do is to file for self sponsorship for PR. They get their PR within 6-8 months. Twist in the tale. A person is required to stay in canada on PR status for 3 yrs ani cheppa ga...to file for citizenship.. a student who already spent 2 yrs in Canada would get 1 yr striked off the 3 yr residency req, so a student in canada who got PR just needs to spend 2 yrs( as against a conventional 3 yr wait time) before filing for Citizenship...
