"JNU and Delhi Police are directed to ensure that no such festival takes place on September 28 or in future," a bench of acting chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw ordered, while hearing a plea by Rashtriya Goraksha Sena. The Sena through its President [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Ashu-Mongia"]Ashu Mongia[/url]sought directions to JNU and other authorities to prevent the organisers from holding the scheduled festival.[/size][/font][/color][color=#3F3F3F][font=georgia][size=4]
Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Rajeev Mehra placed on record a circular issued by the JNU registrar, warning students against the possession, consumption or cooking of beef on campus, pointing to the Delhi Agricultural Cattle Prevention Act that prohibits cow slaughter. The ASG assured the bench all steps will be taken to enforce the law.[/size][/font][/color][color=#3F3F3F][font=georgia][size=4]
The petitioner's counsel Vimal Wadhwan alleged that no action was taken against the students who have openly announced they will organize the food festival in violation of the Act. "As per the Delhi Agricultural Cattle Prevention Act, 1994 there is provision for five years of imprisonment and Rs 10,000 as fine for storing or serving beef," the counsel reminded the authorities, urging the court to direct "authorities not to permit serving of beef or pork or anything which will hurt the religious sentiments of the people in general".[/size][/font][/color][color=#3F3F3F][font=georgia][size=4]
The plea also sought a direction for the ministry of home affairs and cops "to enforce agencies to initiate preventive measures against anti-social elements who have planned and declared the festival on September 28". The PIL alleged that the organisation named 'JNU Foremention Committee for Beef and Pork Festival' is a group of Maoists and anti-national forces and has decided to serve beef and pork on Sep 28 at JNU premises in the name of right to eat, "which in fact is a nefarious design to disturb the peace and educational [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Atmosphere-(musician)"]atmosphere[/url] of the institution".[/size][/font][/color][color=#3F3F3F][font=georgia][size=4]
JNU's lawyer informed the court that on September 17 a copy of the circular had been handed over to Anup Singh, one of the students who had planned to organize the festival.[/size][/font][/color][color=#3F3F3F][font=georgia][size=4]
With the proposed "beef-and-pork" food festival that sparked protests from right-wing groups, JNU authorities Sep 17 stepped in to prevent any further flaring of tempers, warning students against organising such an event.[/size][/font][/color]
