Pretty soon, Aston Martin will be offering the Vanquish, a new $280,000 performance model. That's kind of pricey. Fortunately, for those who are just rich -- not super rich -- Aston Martin's made a few improvements to their much cheaper entry level model, the V8 Vantage. Yes, it's still expensive but at least it's not that expensive.

The biggest changes Aston Martin made to the Vantage involve the steering and brakes. Steering is quicker and more responsive and the brakes are bigger and stronger. The Vantage is a fairly heavy car but these changes make it feel surpsingly light and nimble, especially at higher speeds.
There are cosmetic changes, too, that give it the more muscular appearnce of the higher-performance Vantage S.

The V8 Vantage has a 4.7 liter 420 horsepower engine with either an automatic or a really nice-to-use manual transmission. While the Vantage might not be the fastest car out there, there is plenty of power and the acceleration is accompanied by a lovely whirring engine note. It's not the usual motorboat burble you expect from a big V8 but this more refined sound is just right for this car.

While the start-up sequence is interesting, it highlights an unfortunate tendency. When it comes to things like starter buttons, door handles and parking brakes, Aston Martin often seems to value fancy design over straightforward simplicity.
For example, the car's parking brake design seems goofy. It's located on the left side of the driver. That means you'll have to make sure you clear it when you get out of the car. Plus, it's difficult to engage. Why would Aston Martin design it like that? Another annoyance: The car's firm driver's seat made for sore spots and lots of stops during hours of test driving. No amount of adjustment seemed to help, either.
