Social Media Legend 1: The Boot Maker’s daughter in IIT

Posted on September 27, 2012 by Sylvian 5 Comments
I have been trying to start this blog for a long time. But I could not due to a lot of reasons. A few of my friends started sharing a particular picture today and that acted as a trigger for me to start this blog to help them out of ignorance. So from now on, you will find urban myths and legends that plague our social media getting debunked here.

No 1 : The Boot maker’s daughter in IIT

We Indians are fond of underdog stories and we have many heroes who have fought against the odds to become successful in this big bad world. But this one was too good to be true.
The Legend:

The spelling errors in the picture itself should tell you that this one was a fake. But when I did some research on both names; I could not find any news items in mainstream newspapers that mentioned this wonderful achievement. I could find only Facebook pages that have shared this picture but not any other authentic source. There is also a Mochi media that has developed a game called Discovering Meera
Further research revealed some wonderful insights on the picture.
Meera Mochi

The person shown as Meera Mochi’s original name is Varsha Jawalgekar, a Woman’s rights activist from India Unheard (a NGO that has 30 volunteers from different parts of India who report about problems from their own community) – Her profile reads as follows - “Rather than remaining a victim, Varsha Jawalgekar deflected the blows of domestic violence inflicted upon her by her husband and became a champion of women’s rights. Currently a leader at the Parivartan Kendra (Centre for Change), Varsha also channels her human rights activism into various organizations in Maharashta and Bihar. She uses her IndiaUnheard Community Correspondent videos as calls to action for the people of her community and officials who have the power to effect positive change.”
You can see her profile in the following link

You can see relevant videos from the link below
http://indiaunheard.videovolunteers.org/author/varsha/
And here is the original picture of Varsha (this picture is the one used in that poster)

Rajendar Mochi

This photograph has been sourced from a wonderful blog called Anthropologist Wannabe. She has been writing under the pen name Lotus Reads and this photo is from a series of blog posts titled “Faces of India”. Here is the link for the original picture.
http://anthropologistwannabe.blogspot.in/2007/06/faces-of-indiapart-1.html
Oh, I think Mochi means Cobbler in Hindi – http://shabdkosh.raftaar.in/Hindi-Dictionary/meaning/mochi
This is a well crafted spam thats running around in Social Media. Happy debunking
I have found this story to be too good to be true for the above reasons; I am very willing to be proved wrong.
P.S: If you like to contribute to this blog, I can be reached at [email protected] - I look forward to growing this into a definitive source of myth busters
