jbourne Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012
Desi Blending With The Culture. Typically the Indian or Desi couples/families I have met in US are people who have come here on H1 visa (i.e. work) or F1 visa (i.e. to first study and then work on H1 visa). Everyone has their own experiences and the journey for each individual or couple varies. There are individuals who come on F1 visa (to study) - Get through their education - start working - get married - have children - and live happily ever after. The other group is the individuals who come on H1 visa - start working - get married - have children - and live happily every after. In my own experience and based on the acquaintances I have made over the past couple of years (of my stay) in US - I have observed that of the 2 groups mentioned above, the former one (first student and then work) gels(or blends) relatively well in this country than the latter one. I am sure there are exceptions , and possibly plenty, but I haven't met any! The latter group stays in its desi shell, sometimes unaware of the fact that we are in a different country with a different culture - sticking to their old ways and not adapting to the mannerisms and ways of life over here. I have seen and heard stories about americans getting annoyed with some of such habits/manners. Some examples include: People burping in public, Not using deodorant and hence smelling bad at workplaces, etc. I am a believer in 'when in rome do as the romans' with a slight modification. Do as the romans - only those things which fit in your value system and/or doing which is not much of an effort for you (and not a big deal). Thus you do a balancing act - in turn making you a better team player in this country. Also, it makes the going easy for an individual (from either category) - especially if you plan to live here forever. My point is if you continue with your old ways, you create a visible separation (in behaviour and mannerisms) when interacting with the people over here. It's like reminding them every time, that we are different. I also believe that 'Change is the only thing permanent in life'. If you make peace with this fact and learn to adapt, trust me the going will be much easier. And this is applicable to all the changes in life - moving from one city to another, one country to another, from one phase of life to another (e.g. bachelor to married to having kids). The smart ones are smart because they are always prepared for change! I am not trying to criticise any group over here. Just an attempt to put forth my observations. Anyway, in the end, life goes on and in my opinion we indians are the most tolerant of all groups in the world .Hence with all our unique cultural habits (and mannerisms) we still are probably the best ones to gel in any continent of the world.
