payroll softwares considers all tht when they give you the pay...

below are some scenarios when you might get a return:

1) Show proof that you paid college fee with form 1098
2)in w4 if you entered less allowances than u can claim (eg: u may have put only 1 when you filled the form but for a single person a total of 2 allowances can be claimed)
3) loss in shares or business
4) show some employment related expenses
5) if you have moved to a different location for job and your employer didn't paid you moving expenses.

i guess these are the only situations where you can expect a return
