It's funny how people use the word "dowry" these days for everything, in Indian marriages it's quite common for both parties to consensually agree on finances.
In this day & age both sides are pressing to marry partner who has strong financial ties , well in a way there is nothing wrong I say . As they say marriage is just another way to doing business between two genders.

if you go by stats " illiterate " as you say demand less of anything compared to the likes of parents who obtained degrees.
I honestly don't thing people pressing on financial demands during marriages has anything to do with their qualifications, it's pure greed ,,if you see closely there are substantial amount of degree holder parents who demand dowry for their son and financial security for their daughters so they can secure better lives to their children.

Recently read a survey where a anti-dowry organization asked group of IT pro's how many would opt for a dowry-free marriage, not a single hand went up at a recent seminar .
idontwantdowry.com, has 5,165 registered women users and 8,948 men ,so actually women are less reluctant to marry someone without dowry, dowry is not just one way, most women want to marry someone who is financially secure , who got some assets on his name or their family name etc...simple
So dowry vs literacy & dowry vs gender are not prolly fair arguments to make
Well, for sure it is a gud post. No offense. But, I started the discussion just for a small intention to know our parents literacy rate..
Just like Gnanam vs. Vignanam..

I knou, u may have a very good intention, I didn't mean to Question your integrity infact I totally appreciate your intentions but I am trying to bring to all of your attention that having degrees is not basis or measurement for ones education!
Therefore people shouldn't be overly proud of having degrees or less confident of not having one...

corret me if I am wrong , naku difference telidu
Gnanam -theoritical knowledge learned through knowledge transfer or knowledge sharing kinda from Kbase ?
Vignanam : hand's on experience of applying that knowledge auna ?

Agreed with both of ur posts , our society needs a total revamp and it has stop following west in every aspect of life and start embracing our culture go back to basics old style and start from there square one....
Eppudu naku anipistundi tellodu manam vadu chesinatte cheste mana vanka dekanu kuda dekadu, mana culture konchem addi rangu pusi konchem different ga chestey he shows interest as it is new for him, ,, so alage mana society kuda shud start doing things the indian way but with bit modernisation and effectives.
now a days there seems to be too much of unnecessary competition, people right from childhood has been put through under tremendous pressure, they are taught in school as if they were in a race to win something or as if someone killing them if they don't win, they don't get time to stop ,think and realize what they actually want, at the end all they do is land in a job , just another 9-5pm job, who bloody cares !
We have failed to produce young entrepreneurs who do things out of passion due to this completely utterly rubbish corporate style education.
Hope things change from coming generations...
