Not Agreed Bullabbai.... Parents eppudaina pillalaku manchi life ivvalani anukuntaru and mostly manamey US life ani adhi idhi ani life lo settle avtham antey parents oppukuntaru i have seen many cases where parents were not willing to send their children to US but once children convinced them that they will have better education and better life if they complete MS in US parents do accept... it is not that parents want you to go to US to gain more money in dowry and i completely disagree with show off thing i know a frnd of mine whose parents are farmers(both mom and dad work in field) and they had to send their son to US for his MS only on his will and just to say you no one from their relatives know that he was going to US and its been 4 years now that he is in US but i doubt only 1% of their relatives and neighbours know this, so its not about the show off.

PS : No cold feelings just thought of sharing H&*() H&*()

eppudo chadiva oka peddayana cheppadu,,, I will never let my schooling come in way of education ani ..for me schooling /college degrees doesn't make a better person, they may help you in earning better money (debatable) but at the end of the day education is how you treat other people with respect, continuing to learn while we grow, standup what what you believe in and be generous enough to help the needed
people will be remembered and loved to what they are as a person , what values they stand for and how they affect other people lives(family members, friends etc)...not how many degrees they have, how much money they earned.
so in that sense I would say majority of the Indian parents are educated enough, they strive every minute of their life to provide better lives to their children , take care of aged elders during their elderly time compared to rest of the world, Hospitality towards guests etc ,, inka chala cheppukovatchu

So lets say cheers for Indian parents S%Hi
(IDK much abt parenting in west, yet to figure out !)

Well, for sure it is a gud post. No offense. But, I started the discussion just for a small intention to know our parents literacy rate..
Just like Gnanam vs. Vignanam..

It's funny how people use the word "dowry" these days for everything, in Indian marriages it's quite common for both parties to consensually agree on finances.
In this day & age both sides are pressing to marry partner who has strong financial ties , well in a way there is nothing wrong I say . As they say marriage is just another way to doing business between two genders.

if you go by stats " illiterate " as you say demand less of anything compared to the likes of parents who obtained degrees.
I honestly don't thing people pressing on financial demands during marriages has anything to do with their qualifications, it's pure greed ,,if you see closely there are substantial amount of degree holder parents who demand dowry for their son and financial security for their daughters so they can secure better lives to their children.

Recently read a survey where a anti-dowry organization asked group of IT pro's how many would opt for a dowry-free marriage, not a single hand went up at a recent seminar .
idontwantdowry.com, has 5,165 registered women users and 8,948 men ,so actually women are less reluctant to marry someone without dowry, dowry is not just one way, most women want to marry someone who is financially secure , who got some assets on his name or their family name etc...simple
So dowry vs literacy & dowry vs gender are not prolly fair arguments to make
