koustubbhargav Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 By Abhimaan Kashyap Visakhapatnam: Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday launched a vitriolic attack on the opposition parties saying the TDP and Left parties created hurdles in the completion of major irrigation project Polavaram (Indirasagar). Addressing an impressive crowd in the steel city, he said had the Left parties not raised objections, the project could have been completed and water supplied without interruption to the farmers. Rajasekhara Reddy assured that despite the hurdles, the Congress party, if voted to power, would complete the project in 2012. “If Polavaram project was completed by this time, we could have saved 11 lakh acres of ayacut in the Godavari delta. The project will be a great boon to the Godavari districts and the north-coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam,” he said. Turning his guns on TDP president Chandrababu Naidu, he said the former chief minister was frightened over increasing public support enjoyed by the Congress. Further, he said people were no longer willing to believe the words of Naidu as he had failed to fulfill the promises he made during his reign as chief minister. He said after sabotaging NTR, Naidu came to power and immediately hiked the power tariff to Rs 350 per one HP and rice from Rs 2 to Rs 5.20. He listed out the welfare shcemes implemented by the Congress government-- waiver of farm loans and electricity bills, free power to ryots, introduction of Rs 2-a-kg, providing 100 days work under NREGS, irrigation projects benefitting ryots. Rajasekhara Reddy assured that the Congress party, if voted to power, would increase Rs 2-a-kg rice quota from 20kg to 30 kg and free power to ryots from seven to nine hours.
