Narendra Modi's star continues to be on the rise in Gujarat. Riding on the back of his success as an honest, pro-development leader, the Gujarat chief minister will lead the BJP back to power in the assembly polls slated for December, according to an India Today Group-ORG opinion poll.

The party is projected to win 128 seats under Modi's watch, a gain of 11 seats from 2007 even though its vote share is likely to drop a bit, down marginally to 47 per cent as opposed to 49 per cent in 2007.

The opinion poll - which is to be published in the latest issue of India Today - leaves the Congress way behind at 48 seats, a drop of 11 seats compared to the last state elections.

The CM's reputation is clearly soaring in his home state. The majority of voters, 56 per cent, want to see him as Prime Minister.

He wins hands down among the voters surveyed who were asked to choose between him, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar - 55 per cent prefer him as opposed to 35 per cent who think Rahul will make a better PM and 2 per cent who want Nitish Kumar as PM.

Posted

The polls say 60 per cent of the sampled voters believe the state's development prospects will improve were Modi to become the PM.

More than two-thirds of the respondents or 67 per cent are of the view that industrialisation in Gujarat has created jobs as opposed to 18 per cent who feel otherwise.

There is at least one road bump that he has to negotiate. The Muslim voter continues to oppose the chief minister - as many as 61 per cent said they will not vote for him.

At the hustings and somewhat in the battle of perception, though, this might not add to much.

A hefty 58 per cent of those polled said in their perception Modi is not responsible for the Gujarat riots. Importantly for him, 54 per cent of Muslim voters think that Modi has been fair to their community.

While Modi still won't be accepted by the minority community, the Congress seems unlikely to be the gainer.

The voter is ambiguous on this - 43 per cent see the Congress as the protector of minorities but 41 per cent do not. Meanwhile, Modi seems at ease, not facing any opposition of note in the state, either from the Congress, within his party or former dissidents.

All state BJP leaders paled in comparison when voters were asked to name the most influential leader after Modi. On who they would favour in the BJP to become PM, Modi with the support of 56 per cent outshines others.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj is rated a distant second with 9 per cent preference among those surveyed.

1995 ninchi party vundi baa...plus ento konta new voters n anti-incumbancy local ga vuntadi but delimitation valla urban seats perigayi so the BJP majority may go up even more...vote share and seats is very tricky. what matters is the combined votes u get per constituency...u may lead heavily in say 10 places and lose narrowly in others while ur opponent maintains a fairly stable margin everywhere then this scenario occurs

2004 lo kooda NDA has got good voteshare kani emaindi?

Vote share doesn't reflect seats Infact vote share for cong was less compared to 2004 but it has managed to form govt in 2009
