Don’t waste public money on R K Narayan home: Writers

BANGALORE/MYSORE: Notwithstanding the objections raised by a section of intellectuals and writers, the Karnataka government has decided to go ahead with its plan of buying and restoring novelist R K Narayan's two-storey bungalow in Mysore. The government has already declared Narayan's bungalow in Yadavgiri of Mysore a 'heritage structure'.

Reflecting the mood in the Karnataka government, a senior minister said: "We respect the sentiments of writers and intellectuals opposed to the restoration of Narayan's bungalow. At the same time, we cannot hurt the sentiments of writers and intellectuals who had initially campaigned for this."

Some writers are opposed to the government spending taxpayers' money on its restoration. Their contention: Narayan, who brought alive a small town called Malgudi for the world, is an English author, and that the government has not bothered to preserve similar legacies of Kannada writers.

"Why should the government spend taxpayers' money? How relevant is it linguistically and culturally? Narayan didn't relate to Kannada," said DA Shankar, a writer who retired as English professor from the University of Mysore. Shankar raised the issue along with noted writers SL Bhyrappa, GS Shivarudrappa, LS Sheshagiri Rao, G Venkatasubbaiah, M Chidanandamurthy, GS Siddalingaiah and Sumathindra Nadig.

R.K. Narayan did not write in Kannada, but his works sensitively portray the people, culture and landscapes of the state of Karnataka. His 1938 book, Mysore, remains a classic of travel-writing; still valuable for anyone who seeks to know about, or visit, the shrines, towns, and water-falls of the southern part of the state.
The Malgudi of his novels was almost certainly based on the town of Nanjangud, on the banks of the river Kabini, some 15 miles from Mysore. The name, Malgudi, was made up from the names of two venerable Bangalore localities, Malleswaram and Basavangudi.
The restaurant-owners, printers, shopkeepers, teachers, housewives and students who people Narayan’s stories are as authentic Kannadigas as one can get. Which is why the television serial, Malgudi Days, was such a hit in Kannada and among Kannadigas. And it continues to be watched, 30 years after it was first made, available in DVDs that can be downloaded from the internet.
I hope the Kannada writers [who claimed Narayan was, so to say, a ‘foreigner’, have the good grace to withdraw their protest after this necessary intervention by Girish Karnadand U.R. Anantha Murthy. To admit that one was wrong, or mistaken, is in the best traditions of writing and scholarship. Besides, there is the example of Gandhi; if he could rethink his impulsive xenophobia, so can the rest of us.
Mysore development authority vallu road expansion lo part gaa illu koolchadaniki velithe adi R.K.N illu.. so they requested a solution..Then Karnataka govt made a move to acquire that house and make it Heritage.

But..But..some Kannada writers are protesting not to spend money on that house because R.K. Narayan is not kannadiga and he did not write any of his books in Kannada..There are Gnanapeeth awardee's like U.R Ananthamurthy in the protesters which is disgusting.

Nijaaniki R.K moved from Tamilnadu (he is a tamilian) to Mysore and live in Mysore for 75 years. He love Mysore verymuch..he also created Malgudi (Mal from Malleswaram, Gudi from Basavanagudi) based on Karnataka names and much inspired from Mysore surroundings...

adi story..karnataka lo kooda TRS type behave chestunnaru.....
