[b] Hurricane Sandy is a powerful reminder to all of us that all humans are puny before nature's fury. What is remarkable about the US is not only the discipline and preparation with which they face natural calamities but the dignity with which they refrain from taking electoral advantage of the calamity. The election is due in six days' time, and it seems to be a photo-finish. And yet, neither party used it for any benefit unlike in India.

The federal government supported all states and cities equally irrespective of party affiliation; and the governors and mayors across party lines were appreciative of the President. Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor, a ranking republican leader publicly praised Obama for his leadership. Mitt Romney not only suspended the campaign, but did not utter a single word criticizing the administration's handling of the emergency. What a refreshing contrast from what we see in India day in and day out ![/b]
