Rudra, the god of the roaring storm, is usually portrayed in accordance with the element he represents as a fierce, destructive deity. The oldest surviving text of Hinduism is the Rig Veda, which is dated to between 1700 and 1100 BC based on linguistic and philologicalevidence.[sup][38][/sup] A god named Rudra is mentioned in the Rig Veda. The name Rudra is still used as a name for Shiva. In RV 2.33, he is described as the "Father of the Rudras", a group of storm gods.[sup][39][/sup] Furthermore, the Rudram, one of the most sacred hymns of Hinduism found both in the Rig and the Yajur Vedas and addressed to Rudra, invokes him as Shiva in several instances, but the term Shiva is used as an epithet for Indra, Mitraand Agni many times. The identification of Shiva with the older god Rudra is not universally accepted, as Axel Michaels explains: Rudra is called "The Archer" (Sanskrit: Śarva),[sup][40][/sup] and the arrow is an essential attribute of Rudra.[sup][41][/sup] This name appears in the Shiva Sahasranama, and R. K. Sharma notes that it is used as a name of Shiva often in later languages.[sup][42][/sup] The word is derived from the Sanskrit rootśarv-, which means "to injure" or "to kill",[sup][43][/sup] and Sharma uses that general sense in his interpretive translation of the name Śarva as "One who can kill the forces of darkness".[sup][42][/sup] The names Dhanvin ("Bowman")[sup][44][/sup] and Bāṇahasta ("Archer", literally "Armed with arrows in his hands")[sup][44][/sup][sup][45][/sup]also refer to archery. time vunte e rendu links chaduvu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudra http://en.wikipedia....iki/Shiva#Rudra
Rudra is one of the form of Shiva..... Bairagi Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Question doesnt make sense, because the book doesnt bring puranas in to the context....the book is all about how a normal tribal warrior becomes a god through great deeds. Rudra was the first god in Rig veda...he was originally the god of fire - fire destroys, a character of shiva in our puranas. So rudra became synonymous with shiva. Rudra was the trie adi deva. They found rudra statue in mohanjadaro that dates back to 3500BC, the oldest of its kind. Vishnu on the other hand came in to picture only later - and most of the vedas describe vishnu as an aid or friend to Indra, not as supreme god. In fact vedas talk a lot about Indra than any other god. 1
