When the cyclone possibly hits the coast tomorrow, it will only strengthen the theory that November is a month of cyclones for Andhra Pradesh. More cyclones have battered Andhra Pradesh in November in the past one century than any other month. In the 33-year period from 1977 when the tidal wave struck Diviseema, till now, as many as 11 cyclonic storms struck the Andhra coast in November.May ranked next as the State faced four cyclonic storms this month during this period.

But cyclones in May 1979 and 1990 claimed relatively lower toll (706 and 817 respectively) than the 1977 tragedy though the caused extensive damage to crops and properties.During Diviseema tragedy, huge tidal waves surged onto the habitations in Avanigadda area, killing thousands of people.

The 1977 Andhra Pradesh cyclone (JTWC designation 06B) was a devastating cyclone that struck in the entire state of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states on November 19, 1977. It was one of the worst cyclonic storm to hit the Indian shores. A total of 14,204 people were confirmed to have been killed; however, some estimates place the loss of life at 50,000. Damage from the cyclone was placed at US$498.5 million.[1]
