in theory, the numbers of the SPF tell you how many times longer you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, if your unprotected skin burns after 10 minutes, with SPF 15, you should be able to stay in the sun for 150 minutes before you burn. SPF 30 would give you 300 minutes and so on. Note, however, I said "in theory." No matter what SPF you use, the effectiveness usually wears off in an hour or so (faster if you are sweating or swimming.) I have read research that anything past 30 is not really multiplying its effectiveness. Unless you have extremely fair skin, your best bet is to use SPF 30 and reapply every 1-2 hours you are in the sun. Make sure you are using enough, too - 1 shot glass is apparently about the recommended amount for an average body. Also consider wearing a hat to protect the fine skin on your face.
