Job Description:

Description/Comment:We have a very large-scale monitoring and metrics architecture. On the monitoring side we use Nagios core supplemented by cutting edge add-ons such as Thruk and mod_gearman to run more than 37,000 checks in our production environment alone. For metrics we use collectd, Graphite and Cacti to gather around 470,000 distinct data points. It all runs on a blend of physical and virtual Redhat servers, mostly 5.6.

We need someone to help out with the essential day-to-day work of creating and tuning monitors and maintaining our monitoring ecosystem. The opportunity allows for hands-on experience with the latest and greatest Nagios tools, as well as the largest Nagios installation I've worked on personally. Not to mention a heavily used mixed-source and single-delivery metrics ecosystem.

Skills required:
•Some experience with Nagios. Must understand configuration basics such as how to add a new service, how notifications are handled, etc. Experience creating custom plugins is a big plus, but not required.
•Mid-level linux system administration (Redhat). Solid ability to troubleshoot common performance issues, such as slow disk response or dropped packets. Knows init scripts, creating new filesystems, digging around in /proc and other sysadmin essentials.
•Mid-level scripting. Must have some ability with bash and perl, any skill with Ruby is a big plus.
•Experience with any metrics application, such as RRDTool, Cacti or MRTG.
•Some familiarity with SNMP. Should be able to execute an snmpwalk against a given device or server and understand the response.

Looking for a decent linux sysadmin who knows Perl and has some experience with Nagios.
