Sekhar Kammula Sekhar Kammula hits all the right notes with Leader. He needed someone who is genteel, reserved and untainted to play his protagonist Arjun Prasad and found the right man in RaNa. Leader is a cleverly packaged satire on politics and politicians that comes at the right moment when the populace has by and large lost hope of a Leader or a Statesman and when politics has become another very easy lucrative career option. Kammula's hero dares to accomplish his father's unfinished task, he dreams, hopes, nourishes a thought of an utopian State where corruption is nil and caste system is absent.

The hero begins his moves very rapidly understanding the fact that his father was no saint and vows to return the ill-gotten wealth to the state exchequer. He uses the same old political manoeuvres to trigger his agenda and in the course of the story undergoes many a test to survive and beat the people not with their own game but through fair play. A man who thinks politics is just about buying and selling infuses change, hope and fulfills his mother's dream to become a Leader and not a politician by resisting temptation and seeking a straight poll.

Kammula digs out controlled and competent performance from the debutant and the latter, the tall hero who is too tall by Telugu industry standards walks away with all the honours. There are faint resemblances of his uncle Venkatesh in some scenes and does his work subtly and unobtrusively. He is a CM in the film and cannot obviously run around trees so no comment on his foot work.

The girls, the one who played the RJ and the TV channel owner, looked simple, beautiful and did their part well. The most striking and outstanding scene in the film is when RaNa squats to compensate the poor old man and his daughter and offers to get them dropped in their homes and the old man's numbing reply that he prefers to go by bus and feels secure amongst the public.

Many scenes in the film right from frame one reminds you of some politician or the other and each episode reflects the tapestry of relationships. Suhasini lends dignity to her role as a mother who has survived her husband's follies but dies unable to accept that her son is succumbing to the political game. Finally the film is all about the choices one makes in life. If you think that this system which is convoluted has been prevailing for ages will not change, there is this path that is very easy and lucrative but if you choose to be a mother's son then there is life for everyone at the end of the tunnel.

Harshavardhan shines this time as the CM's trusted aide and rest of the characters make maximum impact. It's a dream debut for RaNa and here's hoping he doesn't remain a one film wonder. A must watch film for those who are remotely clean and untainted and also those who think it's not too late to repair their lives.
