if the file ends with rpm

rpm -ivh <package name> to install
rpm -qa <p.n> or rpm -q to check intallation

recently yum was also introduced............
try it
yum install <p.n>

thanks all but "open -a <application_name>" launches GUI. The whole purpose of running from terminal is not to use GUI.
Moreover, I'm not admin.. so application is not in Applications folder but on Desktop.

Does the Application support command line interface ? Not all applications provide CLI and GUI support.
