If sources in the Telugu Desam Party are to be believed, party president and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will quit the state politics by next general elections in 2014.
According to these sources, Naidu is learnt to have decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and move to the national politics, leaving the field in the state to his son Lokesh Naidu and brother-in-law Nandamuri Balakrishna. Apparently, the TDP president has come to the conclusion that the party would not have much scope to get back its past glory, as long as he is at the helm of affairs in the state politics.
The TDP president’s decision to support the Telangana cause is only a part of his overall strategy to move to the national politics. Sources said in the event of Telangana state formation becomes inevitable, he wants to sustain the party in both the regions. While he would move his base to New Delhi, Balakrishna and Lokesh would take care of the party in the Seemandhra region. Balakrishna would contest the assembly elections from coastal Andhra, most likely Gudivada, while Lokesh would contest from Chandragiri.
On the other hand, Naidu would depute a strong Telangana leader like T Devender Goud or Kadiam Srihari to take care of the party in the Telangana region. Naidu would remain the party’s national president, Balakrishna would be its state unit president in Seemandhra region, sources said.
