Bihar Puts Andhra Pradesh To Shame In Gdp Growth

With a GDP growth of 6.81% in 2011-12, Andhra Pradesh's economy is not only lagging behind the national GDP average of 6.88% but is also lagging behind some of the Bimaru states like Bihar that clocked a healthier 13.13% growth, a study carried out by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India's (Assocham) has found.

The study titled 'An Appraisal of Finances of States' that was released on Thursday warned that if the current state-of-affairs continues, AP may not even be in a position to catch up with the national GDP average of 6.88% in the next six months. The study revealed that apart from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, all the other states outperformed the all India GDP growth.

The Assocham tudy said "forward" states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana have reported more than 10% growth in their 2011-12 GDP growth and that there has been a consistent improvement in the growth rate of 'laggard' states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan.

According to Assocham, while AP's growth in the first three years of the seven year period from 2006-07 grown was well above national average its performance had deteriorated in the last four years.

The state had clocked robust growth of 11.08 % and 12.02% in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively but after this boom period, its has been on a decline except for 2010-11 when AP's GDP grew at 9.96%. It is interesting to note that despite a rise of 135% in AP's tax revenue in 2011-12, which is more than that of Karnataka at 88%, Tamil Nadu at 115.3% and Kerala at 123%,the state has not been able to use its monetary resources effectively to boost growth, the study said. According to Jyotirmoy Jain, senior adviser to Assocham there were various factors like Telangana and power shortages that were hampering AP's growth. "In the last few years, the political chaos in the state over Telangana issue has affected the investment climate." He pointed out that while the shortage of power had also crippled the industrial growth in the state, the other major factor was the collapse of the microfinance sector. More than 90% of the MFI funding via banks has turned into non performing assets (NPAs), Jain said.

in 2004 , there was entirely different situation .
there was continuous drought for 4-5 years , and bankers not giving proper loans ..
compared to tamilnadu , maharasthra and karnataka ..current charges was more in AP in 2004 ..
at that time he announced those two schemes ...

free power is for just less than one acre .and those who have capacitors .. if you go and see in villages till that time every one using wired connection to lands ( donga connection) .. so many connections got registered because of this..

in 2009 , due to politics sake ..he continued the same promisee..

you know the state budget had crossed 70k in past 8-9 years .. based on this ..its (400 crore per annum) not big amount to spend on free current ..

loan waiver was a taken central level ... all over india
